After years of performing plastic surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess – Milton, Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Quincy Medical Center, and South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, plastic surgeon Kenneth P. Gilbert, MD, has begun treating South Shore Dermatology Physician (SSDP) patients in the group’s Roche Bros. Way location.
“He (Dr. Gilbert) has a knack for putting people at ease when they are feeling anxious and vulnerable." Dermatologist Viraj Shroff-Mehta, MD
The Board-certified plastic surgeon, Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and member of numerous professional organizations now is excising skin cancers, moles, cysts, and benign fatty tumors in the practice’s No. Easton office. It is a welcome change for Dr. Gilbert, his SSDP colleagues and the people who will benefit from his compassionate care and professional expertise.
“I was in the process of closing my private practice. I loved what I was doing and wanted to keep working, but I wanted to do less of it,” the soft-spoken California native explains. “I felt I could help out the practice here and they could help keep me busy by bringing my skills to SSDP.”
Easing patient concerns
The new arrangement benefits SSDP’s patients by relieving some of the inherent stress of undergoing a surgical procedure, no matter how minor. “The patients know exactly where to come for their appointments because they are coming back to the same office in which they see dermatologists," Dr. Gilbert observes. Having their records, biopsy visit notes and photographs readily available creates a seamless transition from diagnosis to treatment. In addition, patients benefit from Dr. Gilbert’s years of experience in plastic surgery and his expertise in meticulous wound closures.
“Dr. Gilbert is a talented plastic surgeon with whom we have had the privilege of sharing patients over many years,” comments SSDP dermatologist Viraj Shroff-Mehta, MD. “He has a knack for putting people at ease when they are feeling anxious and vulnerable. We are pleased to be able to offer our patients his services in the convenience and comfort of our office.”
Building on his decades of experience performing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at Boston area hospitals and Veteran’s Administration (VA) medical centers, Dr. Gilbert takes time to explain what is going to be happening during the procedure to help allay his patients’ concerns. Only outpatient surgery using local anesthesia will be performed at SSDP.
When he’s not operating at SSDP, Dr. Gilbert practices two days a week at the Jamaica Plain and Brockton VA Medical Centers. He enjoys bicycling, skiing, hiking, and traveling, and recently completed a hike to the Annapurna Base Camp in the Himalayas.
