Reflections by Sneha Shah
I initially selected the general theme “reflective surfaces” purely to take on the challenge of capturing the seemingly elusive: the color of clear glass; the flow of moving water; the identity of reflective metals.
When I begin a drawing or painting, I do not normally do so with a preconceived message in mind. Rather, I allow meaning to emerge on its own as the piece unfolds. Art-making is a meditation for me. I become absorbed in recreating every minute detail of my subject matter as unique shapes rather than as predetermined objects. As the microcosmic details aggregate, lifelike images materialize. This seemingly ironic concept of abstract forms coming together to recreate reality is, in some ways, a reflection on reality itself.
The term “reflection” may be interpreted on a number of levels in this exhibit: reflections within the subject material; reflections on physical reality as a whole; and more subtly, a reflection of my own personality in the meticulous details honed to as close to perfection as possible. Realistic and still-life compositions characterize the majority of my work. But perhaps I will begin exploring more abstract styles as I develop as an artist and continue to reflect upon myself in the future.
Sneha Shah Artist Bio
My passion for art began at an early age, almost before I can even remember. I was never formally instructed in art. I first experimented with acrylic paint when I was in 5th grade, as part of an extracurricular art program at my public elementary school in Livingston, New Jersey. As I entered middle school, I began to pick up more complex drawing and painting projects, both on my own and as assignments from the advanced art program offered at my school. This formed the foundation for more focused artistic endeavors during my high school years. The pieces in this exhibit are from 2006-09, spanning my high school and college careers.
I am currently a junior at Tufts University studying biology. I have been accepted to the 8-year combined degree program with Tufts University’s School of Dental Medicine in Boston and am looking to pursue dentistry after college. To complement my career goals, I have made sure to include at least one studio art course per semester in college, ranging from watercolors and figure drawing to ceramics. I am currently taking an oil painting class at Tufts.
Aside from my studio work, I was an illustrator for the quarterly magazine, “Sapling,” at Vivekanada Vidyapith: An Academy of Indian Philosophy and Culture, which I attended for many years and still continue to be involved with as much as possible. During summers, I work as a henna artist for public library and museum programs around New Jersey and for private events, including weddings and birthday parties. In my spare time, I enjoy singing, travelling, and spending time with family and friends.
